BMW Motorrad marks its 100th anniversary with a special creation, The Crown, designed by Dirk Oehlerking, the founder of Kingston Custom. The centerpiece is the R18 ride, featuring a large boxer motorcycle with distinctive elements like a curved aluminum sheet over the front-wheel suspension and a double-sided swinging arm with a central suspension strut. Dirk Oehlerking, renowned for his work on ‘R18 Spirit of Passion,’ embarked on this by stripping down a new BMW R18 and crafting its design using hard foam and cardboard to sculpt the shape and lines.

The objective was to achieve a powerful, elegant, and fast look with an innovative touch. The team meticulously worked with 2mm-thick aluminum sheet metal, bending and sculpting it to form an 8-liter fuel tank and body parts of The Crown. The engine and rear suspension retained their original design, while handmade stainless steel exhaust manifolds added a bespoke touch. The intricate details, including the headlight, instrument, switch units, footrest system, clutch, handbrake fittings, and leather-covered saddle, were carefully integrated into the motorcycle, creating a unique and visually stunning piece to celebrate BMW Motorrad’s centenary.

The Ghostwriter is a project that invites us to slow down our interactions and mindfully co-create with AI through a vintage typewriter’s tactile and physical form. Its calm, meditative interface removes all digital distractions and takes users on an emotional journey through paper and ink. By urging conscious, slowed down interactions with the machine, Sanjeev argues that this lets us become more deliberate with our prompts and pulls us to read each word one after the other, helping us understand the nuances profoundly.

The Ghostwriter is a transmuted iteration of a vintage Brother typewriter, which was reverse engineered and optimized to become powered by Open AI’s GPT-3 language model. Any prompt can be entered through the typewriter, and upon hitting the return key, an original response is generated from the AI. Inside is an Arduino that decodes the user’s prompts and shares it with a raspberry pi which queries the GPT-3 API.

Signed by Mutant Arquitectura & Design and captured by photographer Ivo Tavares, Casa de Bouro nestles in rural Portugal as a sculptural residence that seemingly hugs its surroundings with a sweeping motion. To create that impression, the architects bent the structure’s original rectangular concrete design so as to encircle the south-oriented land, forming a central patio. Program-wise, Casa de Bouro spans two floors: a basement intended for the garage and technical areas and an upper-level housing the social and private rooms. The latter includes an entrance hall, four suites, one with a walk-in closet, a kitchen, and a living room, all communicating directly with one another. Completing the program is a service toilet and a pantry to support the kitchen.

Casa Taller in La Paisanita, has been designed by Agustín Berzero and Manuel Gonzalez Veglia, as a fortress dwelling emerging from the sloping terrain surrounding Córdoba, Argentina. The home takes shape as an austere contrast to its lush, natural context while offering a poetic retreat for living, working, and writing away from the city. The spirit of the project lies in its ‘juxtaposition of opposites.’ The lower portion exhibits imposing weightiness, while the upper portion is perched lightly atop a series of stilts. This duality allows the structure to engage with its surroundings in two distinct ways, while its reinforced concrete construction creates a monolithic presence, a threshold between the earth and the sky.

Completed in under five months, the project brings a truly post-modern mix to the post-war setting; Mistovia effectively concocted a Memphis-style atmosphere with strong textures, design classics, unique color tones and materials, vintage furniture, and tailor-made pieces. ‘Paulina was very open to bold ideas,’ notes Mistovia studio founder Marcin Czopek.

In the midst of the fabric in Chon Buri, Thailand, Boonserm Premthada has designed a new building to house his studio and family residence, replacing his two old wooden houses that had undergone multiple renovations. Located right next to a traditional Thai house, the three-story building is made of recycled fly ash cement bricks and concrete that are left exposed and feature a striking façade texture that mimics a reverse seam. The mortar protruding between the bricks represents the translation of flaws into art. ‘A house of imperfections, flaws and rawness, unembellished nature, exposure, surprise, and simple materials is a pure expression of humanity.’  shares Premthada, lead architect of Bangkok Project Studio, and recipient of THE DESIGN PRIZE 2021|22 in the category ‘Social Impact’. ‘A question of ‘What’s the reason for having a house?’ is the essence of this house.’

NKS2 ARCHITECTS CROWNS JAPANESE DWELLING WITH A LARGE, VESSEL-SHAPED ROOF

all images © YASHIRO PHOTO OFFICE

In Fukuoka, Japan, the Sky Vessel House emerges as a large, sculptural dwelling that breaks away from typical suburban architecture. Local practice NKS2 Architects completed the project for a Japanese couple endowed with a very active social life. ‘The clients often entertained visitors, for work and leisure. Therefore, they needed a spacious interior capable of accommodating a large number a guest. An open and spacious garden was also desired to host parties and other events,’ writes the practice. Tucked within a densely packed neighborhood where significant traffic plagues the front road, Sky Vessel House is designed as an open building that embraces the site’s rich landscape while offering privacy for its residents. To create such an effect, the team at NKS Architects crowned the house’s distorted circular plan and perimeter wall with an impressive vessel-shaped tile roof that gently curves inward, blocking the views from the surroundings while keeping the open sky visible from the central courtyard.

LANGARITA-NAVARRO CROWNS CASA PS-50 IN COASTAL SPAIN WITH A ZIGZAGGING CONCRETE ROOF

Sited in Tarifa, Spain, along the Atlantic Ocean, Casa PS-50 breaks out of its thick, rugged coastal surroundings as a self-imposed yet seemingly integrated concrete residence. Local studio Langarita-Navarro Arquitectos completed the project with a desire to invoke the unexpected behaviors of bodies and matters. Materializing that vision is an expansive roof volume that takes on the shape of a large section of the terrain, elevated onto a concrete slab that supports the weight of an intensive green roof, restoring the pre-existing vegetation. The roof’s characteristic zigzag design allows it to cover long spans and reduce its weight, conveying a sense of near-impossible lightness, almost like a fabric blowing in the wind.

H&P ARCHITECTS’ LATEST CLAY TILE STRUCTURE UNFOLDS AS A NATURE-INFUSED DWELLING IN VIETNAM

Following its eye-grabbing ‘Ngói Space’ building outside Hanoi, H&P Architects returns with another exploration into using clay roof tiles to create a porous architectural skin. Dubbed Tile Nest, the studio’s latest project takes shape as a private residence cocooned in a newly developing urban area of Phu Ly in Vienam’s Ha Nam province. ‘The house communicates the idea of creating a space, a blend of the Nest with many nooks and crannies finding all their way up to the ground and the Ancient Pit House partially hidden underground. This combination gives the house’s architecture a distinct corrugated appearance, with the shell felt like porous/ perforated on the outside and large space on the inside,’ shares the team.

WALLMAKERS’ SUBTERRANEAN HOME IN INDIA REVEALS SWIRLING LAYERS OF PRECAST DEBRIS & WASTE

all images © Syam Sreesylam

Architect Vinu Daniel from Wallmakers presents Chuzhi, a subterranean two-bedroom home emerging from the harsh, rocky landscape of a gated community in Schoolagiri, India. Nodding to the anatomy of whirlpools, the structure reveals swirling forms that snake around three large Tamarind trees found on site. To build these spiraling shapes, Daniel used ‘precast poured debris earth composite bottle beams, fashioned from 4000 discarded plastic bottles.’ The team at Wallmakers took on the Chuzhi project to better understand how unsuitable sites can be converted to habitable grounds. At first glance, prior to intervention, the combination of steep rocky topography, giant trees, and thick vegetation would make any client feel reluctant to inject a home amid such a wild landscape. But Daniel and his team are no strangers to ‘building with nature’.

Fungi Kingdom – Urban Farm is a project that aims to raise awareness about natural and biodegradable materials and to explore the potential of mycelium in design applications. The installation by designers Julio Oropel and Jose Luis Zacarias Otiñano resides in Tiro Federal Argentino’s central hall in Buenos Aires. The Former Argentine Federal Shooting Building, constructed in 1937 and declared as a National Historic Monument, is defined by its rationalistic architecture. Piling eggs, pans, cups, and saucers, Italian artist Andrea Papi’s’ installation Pilastri (Pillars) invites his audience to reflect on the theme of nutrition. Inspired by both the mundane sight of a week’s worth of dirty crockery piled up in a kitchen sink and the grandeur of regal architectural porticos, Papi constructs towering columns that span the entire height of the room from the elements of his very own breakfast. Contrasting the edifices’ intricacy with their solidity, the artist reflects on the paradox of a contemporary morning culinary culture often notoriously rich in refined sugars, and the importance of starting the day with a nourishing meal.

ANDREA PAPI’S PLASTIC COLOSSEUM SHAPED BY STACKED CHAIRS BRINGS THEATER BACK TO THE PEOPLE

Reviving the historic typology of the amphitheater in the age of plastic, Andrea Papi’s Colosseo stacks hundreds of used chairs in concentric configurations to evoke the days of ancient Greek and Roman entertainment. In Urbino, Italy, the artist brings traditional theater back to the people with a minimalist design shaped from the mundane — cheap, used plastic chairs typically found in people’s back gardens — challenging the historic idea of theater being a cultural pastime for only the bourgeoisie. Emulating the layout of a grand colosseum, the two installations recreate the tiered format by stacking the seats on top of one another, with the row closest to the arena composed of single chairs, and the highest tier comprising a stack of dozens.

‘SUNSET’ INSTALLATION IN DELFT EMERGES FROM THE WATER TO EMIT A VIBRANT, 360 DEGREE GLOW

Ethereal and luminous, the ‘Sunset’ light sculpture emerges from the waters against its urban backdrop of Delft to reinterpret the everyday phenomenon of the sun sinking into the horizon. Designed by Mike Rijnierse and Ludmila Rodrigues, the installation draws inspiration from the universal fascination with sunsets in films and paintings, creating a large, inflated sun that emits a vibrant red glow throughout the day and night.

Its illumination creates a 360 degree panoramic view to question our relationship with time and perspective. The ‘Sunset’ invites the public for a contemplation in stillness and urges them to gravitate around it. As they get closer or move further away, and perceive the installation from a different area as they circulate, they can find unusual angles and relations with the space.

Dive into the top 10 concept cars of 2023

The best concept cars of 2023 may emerge from a designer’s and artist’s perspective, such as Sabine Marcelis’ reimagining of Renault’s 1993 Twingo and Daniel Arsham’s retro-futuristic NEBULA 928 for Porsche. The vehicles that surfaced this year might have also pushed the boundaries of creativity by incorporating exterior and interior features not common among traditional production cars. Take NIO EDEN’s self-driving car, whose system is powered by artificial intelligence. Its doors also slide open, welcoming passengers to a spa-like ambiance.

A foldable steering wheel is what Opel Experimental concept car offered for its fans in 2023. If such a feature is not enough to make viewers ponder the top concept cars of 2023, GAC’s Barchetta can offer its no-roof and no-windshield design on the table as a contender for this year’s surprise-me concept cars. Its sleek and flat appearance conceals the interior, and its vehicle frame needs to open itself up like a treasure box before the driver can step in. For solar power fans, Aptera’s three-wheeled, road-legal spaceship vehicle is dubbed to be able to drive for months without charging, thanks to the planted photovoltaic panels on the surface of the flying car.

Many more best concept cars need to be talked about. As we continue our annual BIG Stories round-up, our list of the TOP 10 concept cars of 2023 brings back some of the imagined and designed vehicles that can give viewers and brands alike a glimpse into the future of modern cars.

After decades on hold, Hyundai Motor Company brought to life the Pony Coupe concept from the original 1974 design that never came true. It was Giorgetto Giugiaro, the original designer, and his son Fabrizio who recreated the vehicle together with Hyundai and did so faithfully based on what should have been a real-life model then. The concept was unveiled at Villa Pliniana in Lake Como, Italy, where the original design was born as an idea.

Staying true to the 1974 design showcased at the Turin Motor Show, the recreated Pony Coupe maintains its wedge-style nose, circular headlamps, and geometric lines. The two-door sports car boasts a sleek roofline, a distinct B-pillar shape, and an interior with the iconic Giugiaro monocoque design. This concept design was also a significant influence on Giugiaro’s work on the DeLorean DMC 12, famously featured in the ‘Back to the Future’ movies.

designboom rounds up the top 10 fashion phenomena of 2023

Looking back at 2023, we can’t help but remember how Adobe stunned the world with its shapeshifting Project Primrose dress; how MSCHF’s big red boots brought the cartoon world to shoewear; how the GANNI x Modern Synthesis Bou Bag made headlines with its sleek bacteria textile; and how Balena elevated its circular economy game with biodegradable sandals. Combined, these new material explorations and technologies have shifted the currents in fashion design, bringing our attention closer to what style and attires can do for the world — beyond the runway and beyond the closet. Check out our TOP 10 picks spotlighting this year’s most innovative fashion phenomena that swooped in and shook up the status quo.

USING CAMERA DETECTORS, YING GAO EXPLORES ROBOTIC CLOTHING AS AMBIGUOUS LIVING PORTRAITS

image © Maude Arsenault

Montreal-based fashion designer and professor Ying Gao returns with her latest mind-bending robotic clothing collection, this time exploring photographic ambiguity, blurred identities, and the public gaze. Titled In camera, the project features two pieces of garments equipped with camera lens detectors that come alive when a person photographs them. Nodding to British figurative artist Francis Bacon’s portraits, paintings created from photographs, these garments evoke hybrid and provisional entities. Their ambivalence is at the heart of the work whose name says it all: both private, behind closed doors (the literal translation of ‘In camera’), and public since they depend on the gaze of the viewer/photographer. The result is a pair of living portraits that echo the faces of strangers, partially hidden behind their phones or cameras, merging in a gallery of blurred identities that are both distinct and similar.

TAKE STYLE CUES FROM ASTROBOY WITH MSCHF’S ‘BIG RED BOOTS’

New York-based art collective MSCHF is back with another outlandish shoe, the Big Red Boot, this time blending high fashion with the cartoon world. The release shows on-the-nose influence from animated icons like Astroboy and Dora the Explorer’s best friend, Boots. Despite their comically over-inflated size, the boots are designed to be worn with comfort, with a rubber TPU shell and an EVA sole, on which the MSCHF logo is subtly stamped. To celebrate the launch, the design team takes to the streets of New York to capture the outrageous footwear in action. The team writes: ‘You never design shoes to be shaped like feet. Big Red Boots are REALLY not shaped like feet, but they are EXTREMELY shaped like boots.’

Balena plays the circular economy game. Rather than betting on companies who deem themselves as sustainable-products churners, it forges its own path by producing soft compostable sandals ‘BioCir Slides’ made from flexible biodegradable thermoplastic and mixed with the recycled waste of the fashion industry. Balena relies on science and research and has developed its in-house system BioCir, driven by compostable and biodegradable thermoplastic materials including natural and easily scalable biodegradable polymers. WASHABLE 3D-PRINTED SHOES BY ZELLERFELD CAN BE BROKEN DOWN AND REMADE AGAIN

Shoe company Zellerfeld wants to democratize sneaker-making. In fact, it tailors all of its 3D-printed shoes based on the user’s fashion tastes and feet size. The thermoplastic material it uses for the shoes allows Zellerfeld to produce spongy and recyclable footwear. When the user is over their Zellerfeld kicks, they can just give them back to the company. Zellerfeld then will break the shoes down and remake them from the same filament that sews the shoes. The neon shades of Zellerfeld’s 3D-printed shoes immediately capture attention. From vibrant orange to saturated red, the colors give a confident impression from the get-go. The design follows through with the recyclable footwear’s futuristic style: bulging dots, crocodile skins, swing-style loafers, and boat-shaped smiles. The closed-toes shoes vary in designs too, and those who prefer boots-like or office sneakers can find their own pair from Zellerfeld’s collection.

Adobe premiered Project Primrose, an animated, shapeshifting, and interactive dress that can change its design and style almost every second at the Adobe MAX 2023: Sneaks presentation in Los Angeles on October 10th. Christine Dierk led the unveiling where she shocked the audience as at a click of a button her interactive dress covered in scales began to shift its patterns almost continuously and at her command. Later on, as seen in the video, she tells the viewers that they can also just leave the created designs animated and that the outfit can even detect the movement of the wearer, making the design sway and slosh in the direction the wearer goes. Project Primrose’s premise is to make a wearable, adaptable, and flexible dress made with non-emissive textiles where content creators and designers can flash their designs and creations onto the interactive dress as if it were their canvas.

TIGER SUMMER PUFFER JACKET USES COLD BEER TO COOL DOWN BODY TEMPERATURE

images courtesy of Tiger Beer

Heatwave loses as Tiger Beer and fashion designer Izzy Du create the first summer puffer jacket that keeps the body temperature cool, lowering it by up to five degrees Celsius using cold beer cans. Viewers can try the wearable technology firsthand in Paris at Izzy Du’s pop-up on 127 rue de Turenne between October 1st and 3rd, 2023 and during Paris Fashion Week 2023. The fashionable summer puffer jacket has a network of tubes filled with water which is pumped around the wearer’s body. These tubes make contact with key points where the arteries are closest to the skin. As soon as the wearer puts ice-cold cans in the beer pockets, the canisters transmit their temperature to the network of tubes to chill the water, thus cooling down the body temperature before sweat begins to form. Wearing a puffer jacket in the summer might attract attention from onlookers, but donning it is no longer just for fashion. In the case of Tiger Beer and Izzy Du, it means protecting the wearer’s health from suffering extreme heat.

For its AW24 collection, Stone Island unveils its thermal-reactive Poly Strata Ice Jacket which changes color from pink to stucco white when it gets exposed to heat or cold. The heat-sensitive garment was first introduced by Stone Island in 1989, and today, its Poly Strata Ice Jacket gets an upgrade as the brand infuses reactive pigments micro-encapsulated into the double layer of polyurethane. CORTEN STEEL AND STONE COMPONENTS REVAMP COLLAPSED OPEN WASHHOUSE IN ITALY

TOP 10 reader submissions of 2023 – public spaces
image by Gianluca Panichi, Dimitri Magnanini, Giulia Amadei

The project by Architetto Gianluca Panichi involves the reconfiguration of a building complex in need of restoration following the disastrous flood of 2011 in Mulazzo, Italy. Initial safety measures are implemented in the structure comprising a fountain, a covered washhouse, and a flight of steps connecting to the adjacent public park. Rather than pursuing a faithful reconstruction of the lost volumes, the development focuses on a balanced and respectful functional recovery, integrating the missing elements while reviving the site by harmonizing with its historical context. By crafting new structures and integrations made of ‘minimal’ materials such as concrete, corten steel, and stone, the project seamlessly merges the built volumes with a broader system of paths and equipped green areas.

ARCHES, CURVES AND ROUNDED EDGES CONTOUR PARCONIDO BAKERY CAFE IN SOUTH KOREA

sukchulmok-presents-a-modern-baking-cafe-with-red-bricks-and-travertine-in-south-korea-1-643602465f1ba (1)

Design practice sukchulmok constructs ‘parconido’ bakery cafe in northern Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, utilizing subtle contemporary materials and shaping simple rounded forms. The cafe presents a consistent space in which forms, furniture, and lighting are designed to create a unified atmosphere. The project draws from ‘European’ architectural elements applying red brick in combination with stainless steel.

The structure develops in layers ‘stuck one by one’ with columns that surge everywhere and rounded walls wrapping the open layout. Although the walls and columns compose different shapes, they all present a radius of 600 mm. Following this design rule that acts as a reference point throughout the construction, the project generates a sense of unity while still avoiding monotony. The contemporary café is built out of stacked clay bricks with no holes, that are cut off by two-thirds of the thickness and form a coating skin on an iron frame to relieve the load.

THOUSANDS OF THIN CLAY TILES COVER MUSEUM’S ENTIRE FACADE IN VIETNAM

ARB Architects crafts Vietnamese Đạo Mẫu Museum, a cultural project driven by the vision of Artist Xuan Hinh, a renowned Vietnamese folk artist. Positioned in a village near Hanoi, the museum spans 5,000 sqm amidst a 50-year-old orchard, preserving the existing landscape, including pine and bonsai trees, an existing small house, and original gate pillars. The design integrates new functional blocks for accommodation, galleries, and a kitchen around the old house, which now serves as an artifact display area.

Traditional clay tiles collected from historic houses in nearby areas dominate the museum’s material palette, symbolizing a commitment to preserving architectural heritage amid ongoing urbanization. The use of these tiles is rooted in the artist’s memories of votive dance ceremonies and the sacred atmosphere created by the smoke of incense that penetrates through the tiled roofs of the temples.

PAUL LE QUERNEC BUILDS COCOON-SHAPED LIVING UNITS FOR NEW NURSERY IN FRANCE

image courtesy of Paul Le Quernec Architectes

Since 1985, the nursery managed by the Maison Départementale de l’Enfance et de la Famille du Calvados (MDEFC) in Caen, France, has been welcoming children, aged 0 to 6 years old, coming from disadvantaged or abusive homes. This temporary placement protects and supports these children dealing with complex, traumatic situations before offering them a lasting solution adapted to their specific needs. Wanting to relocate its premises to a new site, the MDFEC invited Paul Le Quernec Architectes for a consultation back in 2017 to envision a new nursery in Fleury-sur-Orne, just outside Caen.

The resulting design emerges as a village-like complex with cocoon-shaped living units that link to two other buildings. Specifically, the 2,650 sqm site was organized into three structures: a technical building containing various workshops; a logistical building holding administrative departments, medical and parental reception, and laundry and dining services; a building grouping the children’s living areas.

WOODEN SHINGLES OVERLAY CLUSTER OF MONOLITHIC CABINS ON CHINESE WATERFRONT

Located in the Fragrant Lake of Huanggang City in China, the Sprite Cabin is one part of the ‘wild’ getaway homes building plan by architectural practice Wiki World. Adjacent to the Inner Lake Peninsula, the construction puts up two clusters of crystal-like formations surrounded by a bamboo forest. The two geometric structures shape three peaked volumes each covering them in wooden shingles.

The three hexagonal plans of each cabin distribute a bedroom, a living area, and a bathroom respectively. The cutting edges of the wooden lodges frame sharp triangular openings toward the riverscape. The construction applies laminated wood, while each irregular component and node is designed and customized through digital technology, achieving full assembly on-site. The outer facade composes a fish-skin-like shell while the inner surfaces of the volumes put up reflective aluminum plates mirroring the enclosing plantation. The two seemingly conflicting materials complement each other merging the cabin with the landscape.

Inaugurated earlier this year in the Albanian capital, MVRDV’s renovated Pyramid of Tirana has opened to the public as a new cultural hub. The brutalist landmark originally served as a museum dedicated to the communist dictator Enver Hoxh, and later stood as a ghosted architecture that filled people with mixed emotions. Despite its bittersweet past, the structure witnessed a dramatic transformation today. MVRDV reimagines its concrete structure as an open sculpture in a new park, home to an ensemble of colorful boxes scattered in and around the original building that now house cafés, studios, workshops, start-up offices, incubators, festivals, and classrooms where Albanian youth will learn various technology subjects for free.

In the autumn of 2022, Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) unveiled their design for the new art museum of the Luigi Rovati Foundation in Milan. The design introduced a series of cavernous underground galleries, carefully crafted to showcase both Etruscan and contemporary art. Now, nearly two years later, the museum stands as an open and hybrid space that breathes culture into the vibrant Italian city. NERI&HU CRAFTS QUIJANG MUSEUM EXTENSION AS A LUMINOUS BEACON IN XI’AN, CHINA

Neri&Hu revealed this year its newly completed extension to the Quijang Museum of Fine Arts in Xi’an, China. The project marks a new threshold to the Datang Everbright City just south of the city’s renowned Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Following the client’s request, the architects introduced a new architectural symbol at the East Entry of the existing museum. Neri&Hu harnesses the concept of a glowing lantern to house commercial and museum programming while standing as an illuminated beacon for the neighborhood. While the surrounding area is already populated by galleries, the design of the new building has been carefully considered to minimize its impact. The result of this is a circular form, which allows for a glimpse of the rooftop landscape from any space on the second floor and above.

render by OPEN Architecture

OPEN Architecture has unveiled Space Crystals, a digital space museum and experience center in Yantai, China. The structure resembles an extraterrestrial-looking object that landed mysteriously in the clearing of a seaside park. Situated at an oval clearing of a woody seaside park, the center is dedicated to deciphering the mysteries of the universe for the public. Visitors catch glimpses of an unusual black object perched upslope of a grassy spot through the gaps between trees. Shrouded with a mystical sheen (photovoltaic glass), its long axis points toward the ocean and the sky, seemingly ready to leap from Earth to Space.

The newly inaugurated Edogawa City Eiko Kadono Museum of Children’s Literature, also recognized as the ‘Kiki’s Museum of Literature,’ crafted by Kengo Kuma and Associates, has recently opened its doors to the public. Paying homage to author Eiko Kadono, the design team conceptualized a hilltop museum dedicated to children‘s literature, resembling a village-like structure with whimsical interiors. Distinguished by its playful pink and white geometrical design, the museum offers a panoramic view of Nagisa Park in Edogawa City, Tokyo. Visitors across all ages are invited to experience the world of Eiko Kadono, who famously authored ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service,’ a story which, in 1989, inspired Studio Ghibli’s film adaptation directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Greek designer Yiannis Ghikas introduces new, colorful pieces to his glassblown Soda table series for Italian producer Miniforms. Named after one of the main ingredients of glass, the latest collection builds on the designer’s exploration into the highly skilled and underrepresented glassblowing work of artisans on the Italian island of Murano. In the process, Yiannis wanted to highlight the material’s transparency through playful geometries, creating a vivid play of light and shadows. ‘Soda was born upside-down, with a puff of air. It weighs 20 kilos, and it is blown, drawn out, and shaped by three master glassmakers. The result is a single volume of glass with three large petals forming the stem. In Soda, the glass vibrates: its tough, hammered surface fragments its transparency to give a primitive aesthetic. This is artistic value granted to an industrial product,’ writes Yiannis

Breaking away from traditional chair forms, Xingcheng Zhu’s XOX Chair merges elements of nature and Zen, resulting in a warm and contemporary furniture piece. The chair takes its name from its wooden, X-shaped intersecting components and O-shaped seat, its circular contour embracing the user’s body and offering a sense of comfort reminiscent of the soft curves of meandering rivers and branches of trees. The intersecting elements of the chair’s frame are crafted from natural wood, its tones and textures infusing warmth and familiarity to the overall design. The interplay between the wood’s grain and the clarity of the transparent PET material, recycled from plastic bottles, achieves a balance between nature and modernity.

MEET TONY®, A CLAY-BASED REFRIGERATOR POWERED BY EVAPORATIVE COOLING

Signed by industrial designer Lea Lorenz, TONY® is a modern-day reimagining of the clay jug cooler method. Unlike its ancestral design, this portable refrigerator and food container is powered by evaporative cooling, all thanks to its porous raku clay shell. This material naturally absorbs water from a reservoir and, through evaporation, lowers the interior temperature to a range of 13°C-17°C without any electricity. ‘It creates an ideal storage environment for foods that, on the one hand, a fridge is too cold for and that, on the other hand, spoil more quickly at room temperature,‘ writes Lea. The designer elaborates with some food safety facts: fruit and vegetables are sensitive to cold and lose their flavor if stored in temperatures that are too low, which also inhibits post-ripening processes. Incorrectly storing foods leads to unnecessary spoilage and, eventually, avoidable waste. With TONY®, fruits and vegetables could stay fresh much longer than in a standard refrigerator or on the counter. The project was selected as part of the BioArtLaboratories Talent Pressure Cooker programme at Dutch Design Week 2023

Alexander Shayle infuses a touch of whimsy to the world of coffee products with Silo/Mill — a conceptual grinder and vacuum storage jar that draw inspiration from the industrial charm of grain silos and agricultural architecture. The project embodies and transforms identifiable visual elements from these structure structures, such as corrugated steel paneling, robust structural support beams, and raw materiality. As a result, the utilitarian bulk storage concept of grain silos is reinterpreted into a vacuum-sealed container for freshly roasted coffee beans, while the electric grinder, designed to process these beans, takes inspiration from traditional Windmills used for milling grains in households.

Atsushi Shindo’s HAORI stands at an intersection between a kimono and a self-standing lampshade, where its gently curving form emulates the folds of the traditional Japanese clothing in aluminum and leather. Becoming both the shade and the base, the minimalist lighting fixture envelops within an internal projection which converts a magnetic LED light into a soft, soothing glow. As the lamps are dressed in a different material, their distinct properties exude a different ambient tone of lighting, from the delicate perforated rays of seeping through the aluminum holes, to the soft semi-translucent grow through the fabric. The project was unveiled at SaloneSatellite during Milan Design Week 2023 at the Fiera Milano exhibition center.

ADK26’S TWO-PART HANDLE TRANSFORMS IT FROM A HATCHET TO A LOG-SPLITTING AXE

TOP 10 reader submissions of 2023 – design products

In the world of outdoor adventuring, having the right tools can make all the difference. Hatchets are perfect for tasks like kindling creation and carving, but when it comes to heavy-duty log splitting, a long-handled axe is essential. The ADK26 by Agawa Gear is a multifunctional tool that intertwines the precision of a hatchet with the power of an axe to tackle any outdoor challenge.

As a hatchet, the head’s tailored Scandinavian-style bit allows for carving with precision, which with an added handle extension, constructed from impact-modified glass-fiber-reinforced nylon for durability can transform the ADK26 into a 26 inch axe. Its wide-cheeked head enables it to deliver powerful log splitting performance, while a flat poll at the back even serves as a hammer. At the end of its use, the handle can be disconnected and all components can be packed away into one compact cordura sheath for lighter adventuring.

KENJI ABE REINTERPRETS TRADITIONAL SAKE CUPS WITH DURALUMIN — A ROBUST AIRCRAFT METAL

hakusaku-instilled-with-the-rigor-of-the-aircraft-industry-designed-by-kenji-abe-1-641ac6f3020ad

Tokyo-based designer Kenji Abe puts a contemporary, industrial twist on the age-old Japanese tradition of drinking sake with his metal HAKUSAKU cup ranges. While the nationally-beloved beverage is typically served in a porcelain cup, HAKUSAKU is instilled with the rigor of the aircraft industry, precisely carved from pure ingots of super duralumin — one of the hardest and strongest yet lightweight aluminum alloys used in aircraft manufacturing.

The cup is meticulously molded to an optimal thickness and roundness which allows the flavors of its contained beverage to take center stage while lending a stylistic facade. Slim and elegant, HAKUSAKU is inspired by the kiriko style of traditional Japanese cut glass, engraved with a pattern of curving lines and finished with a thin rim that accentuates the flavors of sake and enhances comfort during drinking.
